Apple crisps are always in heavy rotation at our house come fall. They’re not complicated, they’re delicious and they embody the warm, comforting flavors you crave when the temperatures start to drop. It also doesn’t hurt that they give you the perfect excuse to have a big scoop of ice cream on top. It’s two desserts in one!
But let’s face it, if you have guests over, it won’t ever be on the top of your dessert list as it doesn’t tend to be the prettiest. So I decided to take things to a smaller scale. I also put my own spin on the tradition streusel topping that you’d normally find topping an apple crisp thanks to the delivery of my first NatureBox.
NatureBox delivers a world of carefully sourced and nutritionist-approved foods right to your door. I had been wanting to try it as since we’re on the go so often, I find that I’m always wanting a snack in the car. When you join NatureBox, you’ll receive five different snacks every month. You can choose the snacks you want or be surprised with their carefully curated selections. When my box arrived, I immediately stashed one of the bags into my glove box to have on hand.
My bag of Maple Habanero Pretzel Pops gave me the inspiration for this recipe. NatureBox snacks are perfect for this indulgent holiday season as a better for you snacking alternative – delicious snacks for your holiday party (and options for all of the picky eaters), easy and unique additions to fall/holiday recipes and fun ways to change up the lunchbox routine.
The traditional cinnamon apple flavor of typical sized crisp dessert is shrunk to an individual portion before being sprinkled with a sweet and spicy streusel studded with highlighted with maple habanero flavored pretzels. Each Mini Apple Crisp with Maple Habanero Pretzel Streusel is then topped with a large scoop of vanilla ice cream before being served to eagerly awaiting guests.

- 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/3 cup + 1 tablespoon flour
- 3 tablespoons butter

- In a small bowl, stir together flour and 1/4 cup sugar. Cut butter into flour and sugar mixture.
- Stir coarsely chopped pretzels into streusel mixture.
- Butter ramekins and divide apples evenly between them. Sprinkle streusel mixture evenly over each ramekin.
- Place ramekins on baking sheet and bake for 30 minutes or until mixture is bubbly and streusel is lightly browned.
Notes
Using 7 ounce ramekins, this recipe made five mini apple crisps.
The contrast of sweet and spicy as well as hot and cold makes this dessert a memorable one. Forget the ordinary, and make your next apple crisp extraordinary with this amazing spicy streusel.
And ice cream. Don’t forget the ice cream!
