Having a box of baking mix stashed in your pantry can be a lifesaver. It’s a quick shortcut to biscuits, waffles, pancakes and so many other baked goods.
As with quite a few things, after purchasing something a few times, I attempt to make my own version. Not only does it save me some cash, but it also allows me to know the exact ingredients that it contains. This Homemade Baking Mix definitely falls into both categories.
What is Baking Mix?
Baking mix is a premixed shortcut containing flour, baking powder, shortening and salt. It can be used to make biscuits, pancakes, waffles or any other recipe that calls for using Bisquick or Jiffy Baking Mix.
All four ingredients are added to a bowl and then cut together with a pastry blender. That’s all there is to it! You’re then able to store this shelf stable Homemade Baking Mix in the pantry until needed.
You know, for things like my Easy Chicken and Dumpling Soup, Upside Down Pizza Casserole or Pepperoni Pizza Pancakes. Have a favorite recipe that uses Bisquick or Jiffy Baking Mix? You can substitute my Homemade Baking Mix cup for cup.
How to Make Homemade Bisquick Baking Mix
[1] In a large bowl, add flour, salt, baking powder and shortening.
[2] Cut in shortening with pastry blender until combined and no large pieces of shortening remain.
TIP: Shortening should still be visible within the baking mix and should be about the size of a pea.
