There are a few classics that you simply don’t mess with when it comes to Thanksgiving dinner. Believe me on this one. Case in point? Green bean casserole. I’ve tried making my own french fried scallions. FAIL. I’ve tried making my own substitute for cream of mushroom soup. FAIL.
Friends, don’t do it. Don’t try to be a Thanksgiving hero with this traditional side dish. Take it from me, I’ve found only one – and one way only! – to improve on the original. Enter my Twice the Onion Green Bean Casserole.
Onions for Green Bean Casserole
Who are we kidding? We all know why we love this turkey day staple. Those crispy, fried onions that sit on top. All the flavor, all the crunch. They’re definitely the star of the show. Especially now in my Twice the Onion Green Bean Casserole. I’ve followed the traditional recipe but upped the amount of onion deliciousness. Simple enough, right?
When someone told me it as the best green bean casserole recipe they’ve ever tasted, it was just the nudge that I needed to share this simple twist with all of you.
What to Serve with Green Bean Casserole?
Might I also recommend that you serve this green bean casserole recipe alongside some of my other favorite side dishes? You’ll find this casserole on our holiday table alongside my Make Ahead Sweet Potato Casserole, Slow Cooker Sausage and Cornbread Stuffing, Citrus Cranberry Sauce and Cheesy Corn Casserole.
We love this Twice the Onion Green Bean Casserole so much that it’s now a year round side dish and no longer regulated to just our Thanksgiving table. It’s just as amazing and comforting for a Sunday dinner as it is in November!
Ingredients for Green Bean Casserole
This Twice the Onion Green Bean Casserole is beyond easy to make and uses simple ingredients to make the process an absolute no brainer. I prefer to use frozen green beans rather than the canned variety that so many recipes call for as they tend to hold up better in this casserole. Mushy green beans are in no way worthy to be included in a holiday tradition.
And of course, it wouldn’t be a French’s green bean casserole recipe without those amazing fried onions!
How to Make Green Bean Casserole
[1] Prepare green beans according to package directions.
TIP: I prefer the Bird’s Eye brand that I can microwave in the package.
[2] Meanwhile, in a 9″ x 13″ baking dish or 3 quart casserole dish, stir together soup, milk, soy sauce and pepper.
[3] Add prepared green beans and one can of French fried onions and stir until just combined.
[4] Bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes or until bubbly.
[5] You will then top the casserole with a second can of French fried onions and bake an additional five minutes or until golden.
Can You Make Green Bean Casserole Ahead of Time?
YES! If you want to get a head start on your holiday dinner prep, the day before you intend to serve this Twice the Onion Green Bean Casserole, you can follow the recipe through step four and then allow the casserole to cool completely before putting it in the fridge.
Prior to serving, you’ll simply reheat the casserole before topping the casserole with a second can of French fried onions and bake an additional five minutes or until golden.
