To say that the menagerie was excited to see the new Lego Travel Adventure exhibit at the Great Lakes Science Center was a bit of an understatement. They had seen signs everywhere – it seems every buys in the city had one slapped on the side of it! – and they talked about it often. It was the perfect choice for a rainy weekend morning.

Legos are one of those great toys that transcend time. Not only did I enjoy them as a child, but now my children enjoy them as well. We all were in for a great treat. This art piece was one of the first that we spied upon walking in. Of course, the kids loved that they recognized the characters that the artist created with legos. I, however, was in awe because viewing the piece from one side was completely different from the other. The photo above shows two views of a single art piece!

And who wouldn’t love to sit behind the wheel of a race car made completely of Legos?

Another awesome art piece created entirely of Legos. This piece used Legos with symbols on the side to get the variegated color. Can you name that movie poster?

The entire exhibit was created around a travel theme. Any and every mode of transportation imaginable created in Legos. In this part of the exhibit you were able to create your own vehicle and then race it against an opponent to see who was fastest. Let’s just say the advantage in this race went to the big sister who was a bit more adapt at creating vehicles on wheels than her brother.

After our visit when I asked the girls what their favorite part of the exhibit was, they both had the same answer. Large tubs of Legos were available to create any type of transportation vehicle that you could imagine. Afterwards, you were able to photograph it against a green screen and impose it on the background of your choice. You could then name it and e-mail it to friends and family creating the perfect souvenir.

See the photo in the lower right? You also were able to take a photo of yourself to be e-mailed along with your creation. Seriously, how cool is this?

The indecisive one at work…

Of all the names she could come up with, this is what she chose. And I had to hold her up for her photo as the camera was just a bit too high for her. Love the end result.
Be sure to check out the Lego Travel Adventure at the Great Lakes Science Center for the entire exhibit. A great family adventure, indeed!
