In the midst of all of the holiday preparations, I wanted to create an easy dessert recipe and make something special for my family. After looking through my fridge and pantry, I came up with this German Chocolate Pecan Pie. An amped up version of a holiday staple that was sure to be a sweet surprise as a weekday dessert.
Easy German Chocolate Pecan Pie
This German Chocolate Pecan Pie recipe comes together quickly. Like in just 10 minutes quickly.
I love that I was able to assemble the pie and get it in the oven while feeding my two youngest lunch and still had time to clean up the kitchen before they were done. A sign of a great recipe if you ask me!
I’m not ashamed to admit that I utilize a frozen deep dish pie crust to hold all of the deliciousness that is the filling of this German Chocolate Pecan Pie. I say, know what you’re good at. And pie crust is definitely not my thing.
Plus the ability to just slide a perfectly prepared pie crust from my freezer any time I’m in the mood for pie? It’s like the most delicious form of cheating. EVER. I cheat in the exact same way with my Chocolate Pecan Coconut Custard Pie and Dark Chocolate Brownie Pecan Pie. More holiday favorites!
Most pecan pie recipes call for just a cup or so of nuts, but this German Chocolate Pecan Pie isn’t one of them! This recipe utilizes two and a half times more pecans.
And they’re whole pecans, no chopping required! If you’re going to make a pecan pie, the pecans should be the star of the show, right? But taking a not so subtle backseat to the pecans is the coconut and chocolate that make this German Chocolate Pecan Pie so special.
Chunks of German chocolate cover the crust of this pie and the chocolate flavor is even more pronounced thanks to a couple of tablespoons of prepared coffee within the filling. Don’t like coffee? Don’t fret! You won’t ever taste it, you’ll just know that there’s something special making the chocolate taste, well, more chocolatey!
Unsweetened coconut flakes are also a part of this hearty pie filling. No cloyingly sweet coconut here, my friends! Instead the larger flakes lend a real coconut taste that partners perfectly with the chocolate and pecans for that textbook German Chocolate dessert flavor.
How to Make German Chocolate Pecan Pie
[1] Coarsely chop German chocolate and add in an even layer to the bottom of pie crust. Set aside.
TIP: You’ll want to insure the pieces are bite size as they stay in chunks rather than melt when baked and cooled.
[2] In a medium bowl, lightly beat eggs and set aside.
[3] In small saucepan, melt butter. Add salt, brown sugar, corn syrup, flour and coffee.
TIP: Don’t like coffee? No problem! You actually won’t taste coffee in the final dessert, rather it brings out a deeper flavor to the chocolate.
[4] Whisk together ingredients to combine.
[5] Add butter mixture to beaten eggs.
[6] Whisk together to combine.
[7] Stir pecans and coconut flakes into egg and butter mixture.
[8] Pour mixture into pie crust over chocolate and bake at 400 degrees for 25 minutes or until filling is set.
