I’ve been dreaming of creating this Black Forest Piecaken for months. MONTHS. Seven months to be exact. Ever since I created an Apple Piecaken for my husband’s birthday back in April, I’ve been waiting for the opportunity to create something similar but with MY favorite flavor combination – chocolate and cherries.
And the time has finally come.
What is a Piecaken?
A piecaken is a pie baked inside of a cake. Not just a piece of pie, an entire, whole pie. This Black Forest Piecaken is a cherry pie baked within a fudgy, chocolate cake.
This Black Forest Piecaken is then frosted with a Chocolate Cool Whip Frosting, cherry pie filling and chocolate curls. You could also substitute my decadent Dark Chocolate Buttercream as well. In other words, this dessert is an absolute showstopper.
And the best part? Nobody will ever guess how insanely easy it was to create.
SIDE NOTE: Those of you who also appreciate a great chocolate and cherry flavored dessert will also no doubt love my Black Forest No Bake Cheesecake. Yum!
I love how absolutely unassuming this Black Forest Piecaken looks before the first slice is served. Sure, any chocolate lover would be ready to dive in but the real show begins once the cake is cut.
Although a boxed chocolate cake mix is used for this Black Forest Piecaken, I have a couple of tricks up my sleeve to really elevate the chocolate flavor to the next level.
The cake mix is prepared according to the box directions but with two additional ingredients, baking cocoa and chocolate extract. If you don’t happen to have any chocolate extract on hand, you can substitute with vanilla extract instead.
I also chose to add a couple tablespoons of coffee to heighten the chocolate flavor as well as to insure the cake batter isn’t dry due to the addition of the baking cocoa. Non-coffee drinkers, don’t fret! The coffee flavor isn’t present.
How to Make a Piecaken
[1] In a large bowl, add cake mix, ingredients noted on box to create cake (typically water, oil and eggs), Rodelle Chocolate Extract, Rodelle Baking Cocoa and coffee.
[2] Stir together until completely combined.
[3] Pour two cups of cake batter into greased 9″ springform pan.
[4] Place prepared cherry pie into springform pan.
[5] Cover pie with remaining cake batter. Bake for one hour at 350 degrees. Allow cake to completely cool before removing from pan.
Feeling like a rockstar – as you should! – and ready to serve this Black Forest Piecaken? I have a few tips!
I find it cuts easiest if you have stored it in the fridge prior to cutting and if you use a serrated knife. This allows a smooth cut through both the cake and the pie crust insuring a clean presentation.
